1959 Chicago

Despite having his degree in chemistry, he’d been working in a grocery store bagging up for customers for the past 12 months straight. He often thought about the last time he spoke with his sister Jackie back in Atlanta, and about the impact of her argument. She had argued that he had been trying to fight to get into places where the white man didn’t want him, and that since he was doing that he would always be unsuccessful.

No matter what though, he continued to fill out applications so that he could apply the things he’d learned in college. He had been in Chicago, Illinois suffering and living on the floor of his cousin’s apartment while waiting on his break to come through. His cousin, on the other hand, had graduated and gotten his degree in Sports Science, and therefore was able to get a job in his profession rather quickly.

His cousin was doing well for himself to be a negro, but he was seriously trying to figure out what the best move would be for his own life. There was no way that he could continue to work in a grocery store every day and still remain sane at the end of the day. So when the news came across the radio airwaves, he felt as if God had answered his prayers.
